A space embedding sustainability, innovation & social responsibility
Moving from city outskirts to the CBD, RLB sought a design to mark the creation of a future-focused workplace that reflects their global values and long-term business vision.
The project’s design approach centred on embedding sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility into every stage of the process. In collaboration with RLB, the design team specified furniture, finishes, and materials that were sustainably accredited and socially conscious, ensuring alignment with Green Star requirements. This methodology not only reduced environmental impact but also championed local designers and makers, strengthening the project’s social value.
An essential planning consideration was a workplace to support RLB’s shift toward hybrid working, achieved through integrated technology and flexible spaces designed for seamless collaboration. Beyond functionality, the brief aimed to deliver spaces that enhances wellbeing, productivity, and connection for staff.
A key design feature is the distinctive paddle ceiling applied throughout the reception and town hall breakout spaces. Designed in response to the constraints of an older base building, the ceiling became both a functional solution and a strong visual statement. It reinforces the overarching concept, VALERE, while echoing the architectural character of 55 Collins Street.
Technology integration also played a critical role, supporting RLB’s transition to a more hybrid way of working. The space enables seamless cross-collaboration across different teams and locations, reinforcing the adaptability and longevity of the workplace.
Hot Black acknowledges the traditional owners, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong/Boon Wurrung peoples of the Kulin Nation, on whose land we meet, share and work.
