Kristy Ball Architectural Division LeadCommissioned to expand this existing Californian bungalow in Seddon, there was a fabric to the architecture that was imperative to nurture and expand with consideration to the sensitivity of unifying old and new.
Articulating the threshold of where old meets new was a significant architectural gesture, where the existing spaces were repositioned to cater for the rest and retreat spaces, whilst expanding into the site to develop a larger communal intent that supported the northern aspects. A central courtyard was a significant aspect of the design to enable lounge spaces, kitchen area, dining and the master bedroom to embrace connectivity to the new intervention of the property.
Juxtaposing materials were selected, with consideration to durability and an understated approach to the initial welcoming features reminiscent of a the Californian bungalow era. Consideration to the pragmatic elements of an active family, concealed storage solutions and connectivity between spaces through various thresholds maintained the simplicity of the design approach to the family home.
