"When I saw the finished space, I started to cry. I love what we have achieved, but it was the way we did it, working together, that made it so special."

Hydro Tasmania recognised that change was needed, and great change needed to be backed by pioneers who were ready to question everything to ensure that their new workplace embraced the three subsidiary brands as one and empowered each individual at their core beliefs.
A co-design process was established from day one with the Hydro Tasmania team, from initial workshop sessions through to concept and delivery. This unique approach empowered the Hydro Tasmania project team to take real ownership of the process and the end result, creating a ‘for us, by us’ ideology that remains to this day.
At the forefront of the business, sustainability was a pioneering factor. From material selection to sustainable thinking around how people will unify and grow within the space, to forecasting the future growth of the business.
Adopting a completely agile methodology, the arrival experience for both visitors and the team was activated by creating anchor points within the space where the team felt connected. By challenging the traditional thinking in workplace environments, the boundaries between front of house and back of house environments were blurred.
The technology strategy for the workplace was a fundamental aspect to enable spaces to function true to form. A large hub space coined as ‘The Village’ acts as the arrival space which day-to-day operates as reception and a help desk, however it can also function as an event space, townhall, working zone and food and beverage offer for the visitors and team.
Behavioural change in which people work was key to the success of the design principles; collaboration zones, duo booths, focus areas and library spaces enabled work profiles to have choice within the space, articulated by sustainable materials, indigenous artwork and biophilia.
