Expanding their offering into South Melbourne and Fitzroy, Huff Bagelry engaged Hot Black to establish an elevated design language that would cater to the unique personalities of Melbourne’s suburbs.

As a family-run business inspired by the New York style of bagel making, a sense of authenticity is retained in the brands use of paper bags, handwritten orders and the 10 signature bagels. The interiors concept drew on the language of “craftmanship” and the underlying brand characteristics of Huff Bagelry.

Respecting the origins of the cursive logo design, soft curves were translated into the space through joinery. While the layering of elements within a classic bagel became the stacking of materiality, with timbers, natural stone, porcelain tiles, rippled textured glass and cork tiles throughout.

Traditional detailing accents the space, with a stone bullnose edge, curved timber panelling and half round timber dowels that form the front counter joinery design. The bronze powder coat skirting and detailing throughout the joinery complement the overall refined design language, with a modern twist in materiality selection of cork panels.

Hot Black acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and Bunurong Boon Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, and the Gadigal and Cammeraygal peoples of the Eora Nation, on whose lands we meet, share and create. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and honour the knowledges of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
