OpenTable is an online restaurant-reservation service based in San Francisco, California. When Melbourne was selected as the company’s new Australian HQ, Hot Black were called in to plan and design a vibrant and creative workplace to meet the needs and wants of OpenTable’s tech-led workforce.

Home to a collaborative team of designers, developers, marketers and product managers, the first stage of the project was to establish the environment’s functional and operational requirements. Having secured this solid strategic baseline, Hot Black were then able to build in a range of creative ideas and design decisions to create the ‘sense of play’ the OpenTable project team were looking for.

Melbourne’s unique fusion/hot pot of cuisine formed part of the inspiration to pay respect to the Chinatown and the significant Asian influence Melbourne’s dining experience has to offer. A secret door down a street art dressed laneway formulated by a diverse range of layers and texture was the design approach to the canvas created to the built form, with a variety of work and play spaces interwoven to enable the user group to embrace and challenge the ideas of work.
